It’s for Us Too

My house is a thoroughfare for boxes of books. Deliveries happen most days, and my sons are quick to shout thank you to the driver before shouting down to Daddy that his boxes are here.

It’s par for the course when one’s husband is a bookseller.

It means that I’m always surprised, and a little disbelieving, when a parcel is for me.

‘It’s for you’, exclaims my eldest, with similar disbelief.

Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses is addressing a ‘you’. He has people sitting in front of him, listening to this collection of pastoral sermons. But his ‘you’ is broader than those he can see. He makes it clear that these God-given words are for the ‘you’ of the previous generation, but also for the ‘you’ of generations to come.

Moses’ listeners were part of the old covenant, rescued and redeemed by their God. We are in the new covenant, rescued and redeemed thanks to the blood of Christ. God has covenanted with His people, then and now, and so this Deuteronomic word is for me and you, as much as for them. Applications will differ, but God is speaking and we are to hear it and respond to it with all our heart, soul and strength. Rescued, and eager to live as those who love and obey our gracious, merciful and awesome God.

It’s for us.

I wonder what stops you from listening? I wonder what has the power in your life to put these eternal words to one side? We might be surprised, and maybe even disbelieving, but we need to listen in and love to hear words that God intends for our ears just as much as those sitting in front of Moses himself.  Because it’s these words that are ‘our very life’.
