In the darkest corners…
Come with me to the darkest crevice of an underworld. A corner that has never known the gift of light. A place drenched in sin. Where persistent liars, evil brutes and lazy gluttons rule the roost. And yet look a little closer, and you’ll see that they are the ones being ruled. Enslaved, deceived, entangled. Passions and pleasures choke those tethered to them, leading them only one way: to their death.
It’s a place crying out for those who are eager to do good. It’s a starved world, hungry for kindness. It’s a darkened corner, in desperate need of light.
And then you see it. You fix your eyes on the flicker before you. And you see the wave of light that begins to gently, and quietly expose what’s there. It hardly seems worth noticing at first. And yet there it is again. Beauty personified as a cluster of people let the light in their hearts impact those around them.
And as this group of people grow in their knowledge of the truth - soaking in it, basking in it, meditating on it and growing in understanding it, it effervesces. It has nowhere else to go but up and out, and into the darkened crevices of the world around them.
What do these people need as they continue to live in such hostile corners the world over? They need Paul’s letter to Titus. A letter reminding them of the precious light they have in the gospel. A letter imploring them to fiercely guard the truth in a world of lies. And a letter exhorting them to make every effort to do good, reflecting the kindness of their saviour, in the hope that as they do, hungry souls will clamour as they see the goodness of God himself.
