Watching the Lights Go On

watching the lights go on

What’s thrilling your heart at the moment? What are you eager to share with a friend over coffee, or as you leave them a voice-note for them to catch up on later?

I’ve been exchanging joy-filled voice-notes with a far-flung friend this morning. What’s been particularly joyful is the fact that, despite some tough circumstances, both of us were able to share of how God’s Word has been at work.

Both in our own hearts, but also in the hearts of others. And it’s thrilling! To hear this friend’s reflection, that there is nothing better than seeing someone’s eyes opened to the wonder of Christ in his Word, and to be able to echo that with a heartily Amen.

I’m in a sweet season of seeing the tangible power of God’s word in people’s lives, and it truly is thrilling my heart more and more by the day. And yet what strikes me most, is that it all looks so weak and small. The seed is barely visible to the outside world. The work looks so mundane, the interaction to ordinary.

And yet.

As we sit down with our cups of tea and Bibles open, the living Lord God, the creator of the heavens and earth is at work.

He’s at work in the heart of a friend who’s just beginning to see who Jesus is for the first time. He’s at work in the hearts of women who have been studying the Bible for years. He’s at work as I steal away for an early morning encounter in his word. He’s at work as I listen to it read on my way back from the school run.

Our living Lord God is busily shining light into every crevice of darkness, as we choose to listen to his voice, and hold it out to others. What a thrilling privilege to be able to share in his work!
